A quiet breeze, ocean waves crashing upon the sand, and three future keyblade wielders running across the beach bring me straight back to my childhood. And Hayden Panettiere’s Kairi truly helped the trio from Kingdom Hearts gel.
The actress passed away at the tragic age of just 36 years earlier this month, but has left a legacy with Disney fans, thanks to her role as the Radiant Garden princess.
Hayden Panettiere’s Performance
Kingdom Hearts is an absolutely bizarre concept. Take a few teenagers across various Disney worlds and mix the childish narrative concept with the dramatic nature of Final Fantasy. Despite Goofy, Mickey, and Donald being in the mix, Hayden Panettiere’s performance as Kairi stands out.
She acts as the leader of the trio initially, keeping a cool, composed manner. Her performance, while as a teenager herself, felt incredibly natural. When she hands her lucky charm to Sora, she says, “Be sure to bring it back to me” with a little bit of seriousness. She also calls him a “lazy bum” at the beginning of the game with just the right amount of venom and sarcasm that works perfectly and grounds the story.
I miss Panettiere’s Kairi, as the actress brought a realistic tone and didn’t come across as the weak love interest she’s portrayed as in the third game. Yes, she does get kidnapped, but she still keeps that more serious tone whenever she’s in danger. Those more natural performances from the first few games are something I really miss about the Kingdom Hearts series.
This one scene still brings me back
One of the most memorable scenes in gaming history to me is simple. At the end of the second day while in Destiny Islands, Kairi and Sora are sitting at the end of the boardwalk looking at the sunset. It is so pretty, even if it’s from the PS2 era.
As they’re looking at the ocean, they discuss how their lives are about to change. Panettiere offers a wonderful performance, perfectly replicating that teenage awkwardness. She gets so excited about her and Sora going on the raft alone without Riku. Then, she sweetly says to Sora with the utmost sincerity, “Don’t ever change.”
It’s so cute but also a little sad because a part of their lives is about to end. It makes me a little teary, and that’s thanks to Hayden’s original delivery.
So, I just want to say thank you, Hayden Panettiere, for your work on the Kingdom Hearts series. Rest in peace to a talented actress.
